Is This Correct? Gustan
Learn the proper way to say you like something
If you wanted to say:
You like the dog.
Would it be correct to say?
Te gustas el perro.
No! That is incorrect.
You may think gustas is correct because this is the second person singular (which is what English uses). However, in Spanish, gustar needs to conjugated to agree with the thing liked.
Te gusta el perro.
The correct way to say this is to use the third person singular (he/she/it) because gustar needs to agree with el perro (the dog).
It is the Te at the beginning that signifies it is 'you' who is doing the liking. So we use the me/te/les direct object words to indicate who is doing the liking.
Les gustan los gatos or A ellas les gustan los gatos. (They like the cats).
Me gusta el hotel. (I like the hotel)
Te gusta la comida. (You like the food)
